What is the surfboard that flies above water?
A foilboard or a hydrofoil board is a surfboard with a hydrofoil that extends below the board into the water. This design causes the board to leave the surface of the water at various speeds.
The eFoil uses an advanced lithium-ion battery to power a silent electric motor that’s mounted on an all-carbon-fiber hydrofoil. Controlled by a wireless Bluetooth hand controller, it allows you to ride for up to two hours on a two hour charge.
Complete eFoil setups vary in price anywhere from 4.000 € to 15.000 €. Similar to surfing, the price of the board is based on the quality, technology, and size you’re seeking.
An eFoil is a surfboard with an electric propeller just above the wing of the hydrofoil, which powers the board to move through any water. The eFoil is powered by a nearly silent electric motor and rechargeable battery. It’s controlled by a handheld wireless remote that syncs to the eFoil via Bluetooth.
Adding to the lack of production volume, the fact that foil designs are changing rapidly contributes to their high prices. Each new design requires research and development, testing, protoypes and once they’re ready for production – new tooling to be made. That all gets lumped into the retail price of your sup foil!
In 2013, Lift’s co-founder Nick Leason– an engineer and avid surfer- came up with the idea for the original eFoil, applying the technology from smart phones, electric vehicles and even drones into a board that would let its rider fly above any body of water without needing to be propelled by wind or waves.

FJORD FOILER - The beginning
We became aware of this new way of surfing in 2020 via Youtube and the spark was ignited during an eFoil beginner’s course. We quickly decided to buy a first eFoil board and after overcoming the painful price shock, the grin on our faces became a permanent companion of every eFoil session.
We made our first independent experiences on the river Main between Frankfurt and Maintal, where an enthusiastic community of eFoilers also quickly developed. By the way, the Main stretches in this area are fantastic: great nature upstream of Frankfurt and goosebumps when passing the impressive skyline in the city area, where there is also an enthusiastic audience for this attraction on and above the water.
After we have built up a new location at the Baltic Sea in the border region Denmark/Germany in summer 2021, the decision was made to further develop the hobby into a business. The fjords Schlei, Flensburg Fjord and Aabenraa Fjord located in this region, as well as the extensive shores and beaches around the Danish island Als are a perfect area for extensive and varied eFoil tours. There are sheltered bays in every wind, where we instruct beginners in low swell from the first surfing laps lying on the board to the kneeling position to free standing. And when it comes to the first flight over the water, we are happy about another long lasting grin on the face of an excited new eFoil fan. So come on, let’s bring that exited grin to your face and fly above the fjords with us!
